Terribly Incomplete Thing

Being American means different things to different people. It means the land of opportunity to some, religious freedom to others, a blank slate to yet others, and so many more things. There is no uniform single true answer about what it means to be American, as there is no single true answer to what it means to be a woman, a friend, a parent, or a colleague. When you reflect on your identities, have you ever felt that your identity as an American is terribly incomplete? When your face is not white, what does it mean to be an American? As you reflect on these questions, notice what comes up for you. Any thoughts, feelings, or memories? Any moments in your life when you felt that one part of your identity was incomplete because of another intersecting identity that you hold? What is it like to live with identities that can seemingly conflict with one another? Is there a way for all identities to be in harmony?
