Promise to Never be Wordless

Language is powerful. Language is the tool that we have to understand others, and the tool we use to be genuinely seen and authentically known. Unfortunately, it happens too often that we are not seen by others in the way that we want. We all have experiences of being seen as someone that doesn’t feel true to who we are. When we don’t have the powerful tool of language to help, it can be that much more insurmountably difficult to be understood and seen how we want to portray ourselves to others. If you are from an immigrant family, have you witnessed loved ones in your family (or yourself) struggle to be seen, because they were wordless? How did you internally respond? Did you have a reaction at all? Have you ever taken on the role of interpreter in your family? By taking on this role, what were you able to bring to your family that wouldn’t have been accessible otherwise?
